James Anderson, the all-time leading wicket-taker for England, has returned to professional cricket after agreeing to a one-year contract extension with Lancashire. Anderson, who will turn 43 this summer, is expected to return to the field and may play in T20 for the first time in almost ten years.
An Anticipated Comeback to the Field
James Anderson has not participated in any games since his final Test match against the West Indies in July 2024. Following retirement from international cricket, he became a consultant in England’s backroom staff.
Anderson entered the IPL auction in December because he wanted to participate even if he was teaching. However, once his ECB central contract expired, he secured a contract with Lancashire to play in the T20 Blast and the County Championship after going unsold.
“Signing this contract with Lancashire and playing professional cricket again next season excites me tremendously,” Anderson said. “I am really looking forward to the chance to don the Red Rose once more and support the team in both red and white ball cricket, as this club has been a significant part of my life since I was a teenager.”
Being in Shape and Getting Ready for the County Season
Throughout the winter, Anderson has been coaching the England squad and putting much effort into improving his bowling and conditioning. When the county season starts in April, he wants to start immediately.
Anderson stated, “During my time as a coach with England, I have been working hard to keep my fitness levels high and continue to bowl regularly throughout the winter, with the aim of being able to hit the ground running when the county season starts in April.”
“It will be truly special to be able to walk out and bowl in front of our members and supporters again this summer because I love playing at Emirates Old Trafford.”
Lancashire’s Joy at Anderson’s Comeback
Although he only participated in one County Championship game in 2024, Anderson, who made his Lancashire debut in 2001, led the team in averages by taking 8 for 64 against Nottinghamshire at Southport.
Mark Chilton, director of cricket performance for Lancashire, said he was thrilled that Anderson had chosen to stay with the team.
Since Jimmy’s worldwide retirement, we have maintained an open line of communication, and our stance has been unambiguous from the beginning. “His decision to continue playing for Lancashire is wonderful news for everyone associated with the club,” Chilton said.
Speaking with Jimmy recently revealed that he was desperate to get back on the field and that his desire to play professional cricket grew stronger daily. This summer, he is focused on the county season, including the Vitality Blast and the County Championship.
“To be able to share a dressing room with England’s all-time leading wicket-taker, and one of cricket’s greatest players, is incredible for our squad,” Chilton added, highlighting the importance of Anderson’s presence for the team.
A Prospective Prospect in Twenty20 Leagues
Aside from his position with Lancashire, Anderson has been linked to participating in other T20 franchise tournaments outside the IPL.
This new contract with Lancashire may open up more T20 league options for him, who last participated in a T20 format during the 2014 Blast.
Coaching Position for the Upcoming Tour of England
Anderson is preparing to play for Lancashire again but will also be part of England’s coaching team. Anderson stated on his Tailenders podcast that he will join the coaching staff for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next month.
