Phil Simmons, the head coach of Bangladesh, praised his team’s unwavering perseverance during their series-tying victory over the West Indies in Jamaica.
Despite only scoring 164 runs in the first innings, Bangladesh’s aggressive style of cricket, spearheaded by Nahid Rana’s five-wicket haul, allowed them to take a narrow 18-run lead. The hitters responded with focused innings, highlighted by Jaker Ali’s brilliant half-century.

Bangladesh’s counter-attacking batting strategy was significantly responsible for their ability to defeat their opponents, and their 268 runs in the second innings left the host team with a challenging 287-run mark to win. Ultimately, it turned out to be too far for the home side.
“I thought the batters’ upbeat demeanor was fantastic. They played with a survival mentality in the first few games [after I took command]. You noticed people saying, “I have come to play the game,” on the third day. “I had a great time,” Simmons stated in a conversation with the official announcer following the game.
Both of these young players were anticipating the Test victory. After losing the first Test match, it’s good to see them bounce back. I’m ecstatic,” he remarked.
“I believe there was no doubt that we had to bat first when we had the delay [from the soggy outfield on the first day], and the sun was out, as hot as I had felt in Jamaica for a long time. The wicket was no longer wet. We were behind 1-0 in the Test match, so we had to fight. Deciding to bat wasn’t hard. Breaking it to the hitters, I believe.
To see what’s there, this team likes to bowl first. It influenced how we batted in the second innings by assuring them that I trusted them and that they could bat first here. All we had to do was improve on the first inning,” he stated.
Simmons seems thrilled by Jaker Ali’s performance and how the wicket-keeper batsman has adjusted to Test cricket. The performances of Taijul Islam and Nahid Rana, especially the latter’s ferocity, were also highlighted by the West Indian.
“Jaker knows his game because he scored three consecutive fifties in Test matches. We saw that he is capable of facing any bowler. He must endeavor to improve on what he learns from this experience.
Taijul bowls more arm balls than [traditional] spinners because he enjoys smashing the stumps. He is improving with each match. Every session, you could see that he was bowling with more consideration,” he remarked.
“Rana’s consistency on this surface and his ability to hit his lengths impressed me even more in Jamaica than I did in Sharjah, where he made his ODI debut. He was bowling in his mid-140s at the end of yesterday’s day. We underestimated the young fast bowler’s situational awareness,” he remarked.
“I wonder if this is Rana’s fourth or fifth Test match based on what he tells me before taking the field. Both his speed and his will to learn are amazing. We will undoubtedly see more of him because he continues to mature,” he remarked.

Simmons also commended Mehidy Hasan, the stand-in captain, for accepting the leadership role despite receiving the offer at short notice. Mehidy was chosen as the next best candidate for the top job after regular skipper Najmul Shanto was forced to miss the tour due to a last-minute injury.
